Lewis Sykes. PhD candidate, MIRIAD.
Monomatic is a collaboration, experimental playground and halfway-house between the work of Lewis Sykes, Nick Rothwell and most recently Ben Lycett - exploring sound and interaction through physical works that investigate rich musical traditions, such as PEAL – a laser-controlled virtual church bell tower, the headline art commission for Sound and Music’s Expo Festival in 2009, and a magnetically triggered Modular Music Box shown at Kinetica Art Fair ’11, Netaudio London (at the Roundhouse) and the BEAM festival.
Lewis Sykes is an artist, musician and digital media producer/curator based in Manchester, UK. A veteran bass player of the underground dub-dance scene of the 90s he performed and recorded with Emperor Sly, Original Hi-Fi and Radical Dance Faction and was a partner in Zip Dog Records. Honing an interest in mixed media through an MA in Hypermedia Studies at the University of Westminster in 2000, he then fused music, visuals and technology through a series of creative collaborations – most notably as musician and performer with the progressive audio-visual collective The Sancho Plan (2005-2008). Director of Cybersonica – an annual celebration of music, sound art and technology (2002-11), he was also co-ordinator of the independent digital arts agency Cybersalon (2002-2007), founding Artists-in-Residence at the Science Museum’s Dana Centre. He is currently in the third year of a Practice as Research PhD at MIRIAD, exploring the aesthetics of sound and vibration.
Ben Lycett is a visual artist, filmmaker, technologist and programmer whose work investigates where art and science collide. His outputs range from interactive installations for museums and galleries to immersive sound reactive performances in nightclubs nationwide. Ben is currently a tutor on the BA Creative Multimedia, Manchester Metropolitan University and has recently been appointed as ‘Coder-in-Residence’ for {CODE Creatives} - part of Designing our Futures, the AHRC funded, skills development programme aimed at postgraduate and early career researchers in the North West.
Nick Rothwell is a composer, performer, software architect, programmer and sound artist. He has worked at STEIM (Amsterdam), CAMAC (Paris) and ZKM (Karlsruhe) and has built media performance systems for projects with Ballet Frankfurt and Vienna Volksoper (choreographer: Michael Klien) and Braunarts, and interactive installations for Sonic Arts Network, TECHNE (Istanbul). He has composed soundtracks for choreographers Aydin Teker (Istanbul) and Richard Siegal (Laban Centre), performed with Laurie Booth (Dance Umbrella, New Territories) and at the Different Skies Festival (Arcosanti, Arizona). He has recently worked on choreographic visualisation tools for Wayne McGregor Random Dance at Sadler’s Wells and interactive sound and sensing systems for Eddie Ladd‘s on-going tour of Ras goffa Bobby Sands (The Bobby Sands Memorial Race). He is currently working with Simeon Nelson and Rob Godman, designing and programming an algorithmic physics animation for large-scale outdoor projection in Poland (Skyway Festival), Estonia and Lumiere Durham.

Generator.
Generator is an immersive, site-specific sound and light installation that captures, relocates and interprets the sounds, colours and movement of the castle’s hydro-electric turbine.
Audio and video field recordings from the turbine room and water management structures are processed by the installation’s control system and re-presented as sequenced light animations and spatialised audio - bringing the workings of the ever-present but nonetheless ‘hidden’ generator within the exhibition space itself.
Generator explores the exhibition theme by reflecting on the water cycle - the periodic journey water takes as it circulates from land to sky and back again - illustrating how practical responses to notions of ‘seamlessness’ through harnessing the energy of the neighbouring river, has been a part of the workings of the venue for centuries.

Monomatic
(+ Nick Rothwell)

Lewis Sykes, doktorski kandidat, MIRIAD.
Njegove dosedanje delovne izkušnje vključujejo STEIM (Amsterdam), CAMAC (Pariz) in ZKM (Karlsruhe). Oblikoval je medijske performativne sisteme za projekte frankfurtskega baleta in dunajske Ljudske opere (koreograf Michael Klien) in Braunartsa ter interaktivne instalacije za Sonic Arts Network, TECHNE (Istanbul). Napisal je glasbo za koreografa Aydina Tekerja (Istanbul) in Richarda Siegala (Laban Centre, London). Ti deli sta bili uprizorjeni na festivalih Dance Umbrella, New Territories in Different Skies (Arcosanti, Arizona).

Generator.
