Continuous Seam.
The work is a collaboration between Alice Kettle and Huw Wahl. It uses Herbert Read’s theories to offer a ‘seamless’ view of value through his inspiration writings on art. Read has been sidelined from history as a poet, art critic and literary theorist primarily because of his uncompromising views in support of modernism and his anarchist ideals. Wahl and Kettle’s work will use a small section of Read’s writings as commentary on art practice, spoken digitally through print, stitch, Read’s own voice and through film. The words take on human shape in the form of a manifesto.
Huw Wahl’s film looks at the legacy of Read’s theories and ‘radical yet un-dogmatic views’, part of a contribution to the arts, which are portrayed as seamless. At a time when value is often measured by popularity rather than intentionality, the combined works explore the relevance of Read’s theories on art and society today and echo Reads’ own words, “The genuine arts of today are engaged in a heroic struggle against mediocrity and mass values...” this film explores the relevance of this statement today, where the digital has become a familiar tool of artistic practice.

Alice Kettle
(+ Huw Wahl)

Višja znanstvena sodelavka, MIRIAD.
Alice Kettle deluje na področju vezenja in sorodnih tehnik v različnih materialih. Njena dela najdemo v mednarodnih zbirkah, denimo v Muzeju umetnosti v Rigi, Svetu umetne obrti (Craft Council) v Veliki Britaniji, Muzeju uporabnih umetnosti v Torinu in umetnostni galeriji Whitworth v Manchestru. Pred kratkim je v Kraljičini hiši v okviru Narodnega pomorskega muzeja v Londonu razstavila svoj projekt The Garden of England.
